Instilling a life-long love of learning and discovery. The Montessori Philosophy and Method, conceived by Dr. Maria Montessori, presents a comprehensive view of the child as an integrated whole being. The Montessori Method includes individualized learning that allows the child to develop at his/her own natural rate of progress. The interaction of children of various ages and abilities is strongly encouraged, creating a positive learning and social environment. The fostering of self-esteem, self-mastery, imagination and a love of learning are primary goals of the Directress/teacher whose function is to guide and actively engage the child using hands on learning and physical movement. Exercises and materials progress from the concrete to the abstract. The Preschool program offers the three to six year old a "prepared environment" with didactic Montessori materials to optimize learning. The child "discovers" concepts in the area of Practical life, Sensorial and Academics when he/she is most receptive to learning them. Calgary Montessori School, founded in 1919, is a private, non-denominational, co-educational school.
